Experience one of Africa’s finest birding destinations on a dedicated 5-day birding safari in Kruger National Park, designed for nature lovers, bird enthusiasts, and wildlife photographers seeking far more than a traditional game drive.
This safari focuses on slow, immersive birding, exploring Kruger’s diverse habitats—from riverine forests and open savannas to grasslands and waterholes—while staying inside SANParks rest camps for maximum time in the park.
With over 500 recorded bird species, Kruger offers outstanding opportunities to observe raptors, large iconic birds, colourful woodland species, and rare regional specialties. Entering via Crocodile Bridge Gate, the safari immediately begins in one of the park’s most productive birding areas, following major river systems before moving north into open plains renowned for birds of prey.
Each day is built around early-morning and late-afternoon birding drives, when bird activity is at its peak. The pace is deliberately relaxed, allowing time to stop for calls, behaviour, identification, and photography.
Birding takes place both from the vehicle and on foot within rest camps, which are excellent for close-range sightings and quieter species. Between drives, guests enjoy camp birding, scanning riverbanks, trees, and water points directly from camp viewpoints.
The safari places a strong emphasis on:
-
Raptors – eagles, vultures, owls, and hawks
-
Large iconic birds – bustards, storks, ground hornbills
-
River and water birds – kingfishers, herons, jacanas, storks
-
Colourful woodland species – rollers, bee-eaters, hornbills, starlings
